Mahsa is an active little girl who loves music and singing. However for much of her short life she has been battling with leukemia.
The little indicators that something was wrong with Mahsa started slowly at age 4. She wasn’t gaining weight. Spots appeared on her legs. Overnight, a brown freckle appeared on her face, eventually the spots on her legs got worse.
With growing concern, Mahsa’s mom took her to a pediatrician in Tehran. Tests revealed that Mahsa’s hemoglobin was low and that she was anemic, further testing revealed leukemia and she was referred to MAHAK hospital.
“I was so terrified with the diagnosis, my first thought was that I am losing my daughter,” said Mahsa’s mother. “Just the thought of knowing my child had leukemia and I had no resources for her treatment, we did not even have health insurance.” She worried about her daughter’s future.
Doctors at MAHAK hospital determined that Mahsa suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. Mahsa started treatment on a two-and-a-half year chemotherapy protocol.
“MAHAK is a wonderful place,” said Mahsa’s mom. “I can’t thank the doctors and the nurses at MAHAK enough. They are so warm and comforting. They truly gave new life to my daughter.”
Mahsa’s mother knew that no family ever pays MAHAK for anything, but she was amazed to learn that extends beyond medical care.
“At MAHAK they provided us with meals, transportation and a place for us to stay,” she said. “I am forever grateful to all the kind donors who have made my daughters treatment possible”.
Mahsa has responded well to treatment, and her cancer is in remission. Today she is a young energetic girl who dreams to be a famous singer.
